Dear IDPF
Members,
I am writing to submit my first-time nomination to the IDPF Board of Directors.
New blood indeed, but a good infusion of novel ideas and thriving models into
the system.
The past several years have been a truly innovative period for me at Springer
Science+Business Media, the largest STM (Science/Technical/Medical) book
publisher. I was charged with launching the Springer eBook Collection in 2006,
no doubt the most controversial model on the market, introducing outright
ownership, unlimited usage, and the absence of digital rights management. Words
that make most publishers cautious. We set out to forge new roads in the terrain
of eBooks and I am proud to say that goal has been ingeniously surpassed.
In addition, my experience in the STM space provides IDPF members with an
auxiliary view to publishing. Electronic books are already the second iteration
of massive digitization for STM publishers, the first iteration being electronic
journals back in the 1990’s. STM publishers and providers have honed their
workflows, discoverability tools, and content-to-content relationships to adapt
to an installed reader base expecting electronic content. I would be able to
share the best practices from a highly-evolved electronic publishing
environment.
In these times of substantial technological and corporate upheaval in the
publishing business, bright innovative ideas that forge new roads, and best
practices that guide the way are vital. I am confident that I can provide you
with strong contributions in both arenas.
Best,
Cynthia Cleto
