Dear fellow IDPF members,
I kindly ask you to support my nomination for the election to the IDPF Board of
Directors.
I represent the Italian Publishers Association where my role is “responsible of
the technological innovation and digital publishing area”.
The Associazione Italiana Editori (Italian Publishers Association) is the trade
association for Italian and foreign publishers operating in Italy who publish
books, journals and electronic publishing products, both multimedia and on-line.
AIE is member of IPA (the International Publishers Association), and is one of
the founders of FEP, the Federation of European Publishers. It represents the
most important book and digital publishers in the country and counts around 400
members, which represent more than the 90% of the total national market.
Finally, AIE is particularly involved in the standard field; AIE manages the
Italian ISBN agency and is one of the two shareholders of European DOI agency
mEDRA. At international level AIE is charter member of Editeur. AIE
representatives are chairman of the ISBN International and of the Standard
Committee of the IPA and members of the Board of Editeur and the International
DOI Foundation.
Taking into consideration these information I think that my presence in the IDPF
Board may help to have a better understanding of the situation, the constrains
and the specific characteristics of the European market that may have
significant differences, especially due the different languages, from the US and
the UK ones.
International and Europe presence seems to be quite under-represented in the
current IDPF composition and this may limit the actual deployment of IDPF
standards worldwide.
Nowadays the EU relevance in the worldwide publishing industry is quite high,
many big publishing group have their headquarters in EU (even if their presence
in the market is global) and their market share positions them within the top
positions in the international market. The importance of the EU publishing
industry recently emerged quite strongly in the Google settlement discussion.
In the last two years the efforts done at EU level in the field of digital
publishing are growing fast, both at private and public levels as projects like
Europeana, Arrow (EU project coordinated by AIE aimed at creating an Accessible
Registries of Rights Information and Orphan Works), Libreka ad Gallica
demonstrate.
My presence, as representative of one of the major EU trade association, may
help to better understand and take into consideration the European market point
of view.
On the other side, the promotion and dissemination at EU level of the standards
defined by IDPF may help an efficient and positive growth of the digital market.
Last but not least, based on my knowledge, I think I am the first woman to
submit a nomination…
Thank you very much for your attention
Cristina Mussinelli
My personal expertise in the area of digital publishing
I have more than 25 years of knowledge of the Italian and international
publishing market: since 1982 I have managed many projects both in traditional
and digital publishing formats.
With 15 years of consulting as Digital Publishing Manager within the Italian
Publishers Association, I have strong links with most of the publishers
operating on the Italian publishing market and thanks to my involvement in many
European and international projects I have strong network outside Italy too.
Within the Associazione Italiana Editori I am responsible for many projects,
such as:
• the AIE Observatory on Digital Publishing (www.osservatoriocontenutidigitali.it)
made in collaboration with all the other main trade associations involved in the
media market (music, audiovisual)
• the international Editech conference on technology
innovation in publishing (www.editech.info)
I provide expert support to associated publishers on all aspects related to
technological innovation in different publishing sectors (production workflow,
new products and services development, legal issues, DRM, technical solutions,
etc.) and create and manage links between AIE and other companies,
organizations, associations and national, European and International
institutions on the same issues.
I also manage the contacts with Italian associations and organizations operating
in the area of accessible content and coordinate the AIE training program in
technology innovation in the publishing market.
At European level I managed many different national and European projects in the
area of digital publishing. In the area of accessibility I have been the
director of the ProAccess Project (proaccess.euain.org)
that has been recently awarded by the European Commission as case of excellence.
I also acted as evaluator for the European “DG Information Society” in
technological innovation in the digital content market.
Furthermore since 1990 I’ve been involved in projects on behalf of major Italian
publishing houses related with digitization of editorial content, use of
emerging technologies for both in-production workflow and distribution channels.
In all these projects careful attention has been devoted to the optimization of
the digital content in order to render them in a media independent format in
order and to reuse them on different channels and devices. A specific attention
is also given to the use of international standards both to create (XML), to
catalogue (Onix, etc) and to identify (ISBN, DOI) digital content.
I am author of many articles on digital publishing. I am also lecturer in major
courses related to multimedia and digital publishing (Master Course for
Publishing of the University of Milan, Media Design Course of Istituto Europeo
del Design, Media Design Course of IULM) using traditional classroom, eLearning
and blended e-learning methodologies and I am often invited to conferences and
seminars as an expert in digital publishing field.
