Dear IDPF Members,
I am submitting my nomination for
election to IDPF Board of Directors.
In working at both a
major trade publisher and then at a major eBook retailer, I have a unique and
balanced perspective on the eReading space. I believe this perspective along
with nine years of experience in the industry will be a great benefit to the
IDPF.
As the Director of The eBook Store from Sony, I represent a company that has
been a leader in the digital reading space, first with the Libre device in Japan
and now the Sony Reader in the US, Canada, and Europe. Sony strives to improve
the device and digital content experience. All of our Readers are compatible
with multiple file types and our store recently moved from a proprietary format
to the open EPUB standard.
As we all know, the digital reading space has exploded in the past year and in
order to grow even further and to benefit content providers and consumers alike
we are best served working together as a group to define a common future for
reading products.
One of the biggest challenges we face is how to deliver a reading experience
that matches the long-established and familiar print form. I believe as a group
we should be thinking beyond just replicating the print model. I want to be part
of a team, along with publishers and technology companies to come up with new
and innovative ways to enrich the digital experience and allow content providers
of all sizes and subject matters to fully take advantage of the opportunities
the space has to offer to provide new types of content to the many passionate
readers out there.
Best,
Christian Smythe
