) Dear fellow IDPF members,
I submit my nomination for election to the IDPF
Board of Directors.
Background
As a
surviving digital publishing pioneer, I am ready to give back to an industry
that has been good to me. In 1993, I started the Electronic Commerce Resource
Center serving an eight-state Western region. We trained over 40,000 people
during the ‘90s in doing business over the Internet. I envisioned a world that
would deliver customized physical and digital products on-demand. In 1996,
Rosetta invented an XML-like mark-up (Nile) that would automatically transform
to ten eBook formats, because there was no industry standard, nor was there any
easy way to produce and distribute multiple eBook formats. As soon as there was
an industry standards effort, Rosetta enthusiastically joined the organization
in early 2000 and we have been an active supportive member for the past eight
years.
I can admit that we’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, yet we’ve
learned tough lessons. This practical experience will be useful to IDPF’s
future. The Rosetta organization is growing rapidly. We are practitioners,
compliant in the new IDPF standards. A lot of quality people have confidence in
our digital publishing business model. Our Board of Advisors includes Martin
Eberhard (former CEO NuvoMedia and inventor of the RocketBook eBook reader) as
well as senior management of professionals of industry-leading media,
publishing, marketing and technology companies. This is important to IDPF
because our top advisors are resources that can advise me in my contributions to
IDPF business.
I have experience in publishing content as a publisher, in retail sales,
conversion, distribution and marketing in multiple segments. This broad
experience will serve the many segmented membership of IDPF; academic, library,
distribution, production, trade, marketing/publicity and sales. In all areas,
user advocacy is paramount. I believe that we need to enjoin print interests
with digital to unify sales and marketing efforts for an improved customer
experience.
Key Values
Do I
stand for anything worthwhile? People that know me will tell you that our
corporate values are my values; integrity, respect for the individual,
excellence and responsible use of resources (i.e., “green”).
Industry and
Collaboration
Industry associations are extremely important. Rosetta is active in the
following: AAP, BISG, PMA, NBCC, AEP, WSA, PubWest, BPNW and ALA. I believe that
industry standards, education and marketing are some of the most important work
that we can do through associations. I am particularly vocal on collaboration
and avoiding redundancy of standards between organizations (i.e., BISG
metadata).
Vision for IDPF
If
we continue with the great work that the Executive Director, the Board of
Directors, the committees and various members have begun then the IDPF has a
good chance for a future of significance. We need to continue to coalesce and
grow international interests. Working closely with other standards efforts is
increasingly important. We are obliged to reach out and listen to members to
make sure that they are heard and their interests fairly represented.
Encouraging sales and marketing innovation for digital products is also
worthwhile. Continuing to hold educational events to share best practices and
success stories helps grow the industry. Many, if not all of the Directors are
peers that I have worked with and they know me well. I look forward to fairly
serving you on the Board.
Sincerely,
Ted Treanor
CEO
Rosetta Solutions, Inc.
