Hello,

I am pleased to announce that Adobe InDesign CS3 now supports the direct generation of OCF-packaged OPS content. A sample generated directly from InDesign CS3 can be found at:

http://www.idpf.org/2007/ops/samples/TwoYearsBeforeTheMast.epub

-Nick

The following is text from the engineering team at Adobe:

Adobe InDesign CS3, the new version of our professional page-layout
application, supports direct generation of OCF-packaged OPS content.

The feature shows up as "Export XHTML / Digital Editions..." when you're
exporting a single document or as "Export Book to Digital Editions..."
when you're working with a group of documents that have been collected
into a book.

The content of the epub is marked up as XHTML and CSS, and will include
SWF files that are embedded in the InDesign document as well as the
option of converting other raster images to either gif or jpeg.

NCX is supported as the table of contents and we generate Dublin Core
elements from the XMP metadata in the document.

The feature is extensible through InDesign's scripting mechanism.

More info on InDesign can be found here:

And you can get the Adobe Digital Editions Beta here:

I think that the sample file deviates from the OPF specification (at least from the current version) in a number of details:

  • The MIME media type of the NCX file is specified in the manifest as "text/xml", this should be "application/x-dtbncx+xml".
  • The package does not contain a language element in the DC metadata.
  • A file named "page-template.xpgt" is listed in the manifest, but is actually missing from the package.

Hello,

That's some very good news. I have been looking for solid OPS 2.0 implementation and improvements, and it's very pleasing to hear so. It will definitely assist me with my projects. I recommend this book to any beginner who wants to delve further into the Adobe products. It's what I use as first reference, all the time with my work.
