OPS 2.0 Elevated to Official IDPF Standard

Dear IDPF Members,

I am very pleased to announce that the IDPF membership has elected to elevate the status of the Open Publication Structure (OPS 2.0) to a Recommended Specification, an official IDPF industry standard. The specification can be found at:

Supporting documentation, implementation and tools on the entire .epub standard (comprised of OCF 1.0 and OPS 2.0) can be found at:

Voting to elevate the specification closed on 2400 EST on Monday, September 10th. All votes by IDPF members in good standing were counted. On August 27th, the start of the voting period, there were 89 IDPF members eligible to vote. The ballot was conducted via a remote material vote requiring a super-majority (or two-thirds) of the number of votes cast to approve the Proposed Document. The established quorum was 45 members and the established super-majority was 45 FOR votes.

The vote count is as follows:

Votes AGAINST 0
Votes ABSTAIN 9

The required quorum and super-majority of votes was met and OPS 2.0 was elevated to a Recommended Specification.

I would like to personally congratulate Garth Conboy, John Rivlin and Brady Duga of eBook Technologies Inc.; Peter Sorotokin and Ric Wright of Adobe Systems, Inc.; Ben Trafford; George Kerscher of the DAISY Consortium; Jon Noring of DigitalPulp Publishing and Jonathan Hevenstone of Publishing Dimensions as well as the input and support from the very many companies, individuals and IDPF members who made the .epub standards effort a tremendous success.

There are a number of companies and organizations who have already implemented .epub into their products and workflows. I encourage all IDPF members to continue to promote .epub as the standard file format for digital reflowable publications; doing so will significantly grow our industry.
