Randall Walker, MD, President, WRT Live Ink Reading Technologies
Randall Walker, MD, is a
practicing clinician, scientist and educator at Mayo Clinic College of
Medicine, where he specializes in transplantation infectious diseases. In
the mid-1990s, he became aware of subtle visual problems in young people
that impaired their reading performance, especially from computer
displays. Having minored in modern language as an undergraduate at Notre
Dame, Randall collaborated with his brother Stan, an ophthalmologist, to
improve text readability with a new text formatting method, called Live
Ink®. They designed Live Ink to promote the dynamic perception of word
groups in a sentence, and to augment comprehension with multidimensional
syntactic cueing patterns. Randall then wrote algorithms with an expert in
natural language software to create parsing engines that execute the
formatting method automatically. The doctor-brothers then collaborated with
cognitive and education scientists at two leading universities to validate
Live Ink, and received Innovation Research Awards from the US Department of
Education. This randomized-controlled research demonstrated that Live Ink
helps students across a wide range of ages (grade 6 through college) and
reading abilities (including LD, ESOL, and AP students) -- improving
retention and academic performance, reducing eyestrain, and strengthening
proficiency by several grade levels, even when readers go back to
conventional block text. The globally-patented Live Ink® method is now
featured in upper-elementary, secondary, and college level online textbooks,
and received the 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association
of Educational Publishers.
